ABSTRACT

Considerando o uso de brocas para remoção da resina residual após descolagem do braquete e a possibilidade de injúrias à superfície do esmalte após o uso dessas brocas, este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um estudo experimental, para avaliar a variação do aspecto superficial do esmalte de forma qualitativa, por meio da avaliação com imagens topográficas do esmalte dentário, utilizando-se a Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), a qual permitiu ilustrar e avaliar a superfície do esmalte após a fase de polimento final, realizada por dois métodos: taça de borracha ou escova Robinson. Foram utilizados 25 dentes pré-molares humanos, obtidos a partir de exodontias em pacientes que procuraram voluntariamente o curso de Residência em Cirurgia da Clínica Odontológica Universitária da Universidade Estadual de Londrina. Os dentes foram divididos em quatro grupos: A, B, C e D, contendo 6 dentes cada, de acordo com as brocas utilizadas para a remoção do remanescente adesivo e o polimento escolhido, além de um dente como "controle". Foi avaliada a rugosidade superficial do esmalte após a remoção da resina e a superfície do esmalte após o polimento com as duas opções apresentadas. Os resultados mostraram que, por observação e inspeção, as brocas removeram a resina residual de todos os dentes, porém, causaram riscos e ranhuras, como evidenciado nas imagens em MEV. Concluiu-se que não houve diferença estatística entre os métodos de polimento e que ambos foram importantes para a redução das marcas abrasivas, proporcionando uma superfície mais lisa do esmalte.


Considering the use of specific burs to remove residual resin after bracket debonding and the possibility of injuries to the dental enamel after using these burs, this study aimed to verify the variation in the enamel surface appearance in a qualitative way and evaluation with topographic images of the dental enamel. The use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) allowed to illustrate and evaluate the enamel surface after the final polishing phase using two methods: rubber cup or Robinson brush. Twenty-five human premolar teeth were obtained from extractions in patients who voluntarily sought the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at the Dental School from the State University of Londrina; the teeth were divided into four groups A, B, C and D containing 6 teeth each according to the burs used to remove the remaining adhesive and the chosen polishing, in addition to one tooth as a "control". Dental enamel surface roughness was evaluated after resin removal and enamel surface after polishing with the two methods presented. The results showed that by observation and inspection, the burs removed residual resin from all teeth, however, caused scratches and grooves as evidenced in the SEM images. Based on the results, there was no statistical difference between the polishing methods, and both were important for the reduction of abrasive marks and provided a smoother enamel surface.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Orthodontics patients usual develop demineralization and present cavity caries lesions after six months. Minimally invasive procedures have been the goal in modern dental practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ClinproTMXT Varnish, on the enamel surface roughness and severity of white spot lesions. Twenty premolars were submitted to bond brackets and experimental induction of demineralization and randomly divided into 2 groups: GI - fluoride varnish (Colgate Duraphat®); GII - Ionomeric Sealant (ClinproTMXT Varnish). The treatment was applied around the brackets. The surface roughness of specimens was analyzed, before treatment and 12 weeks after treatment by laser confocal microscopy, and the severity of the white spot lesion was by laser fluorescence device. The data were analyzed by non-parametric Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney Test, at 5% significance, roughness percentage reduction was performed. The severity of demineralization decreased in both, GI (p = 0.005) and GII (p = 0.019). Enamel superficial roughness levels decreased in GI and GII. As well as the roughness percentage, being more expressive in the ClinproTMXT Varnish group (85,09%). Colgate Duraphat® or Clinpro™ XT Varnish reduced the severity of the demineralization and decreased the superficial roughness on the enamel. The Clinpro™ XT Varnish was superior to superficial roughness on enamel.


Resumo Pacientes ortodônticos geralmente desenvolvem desmineralização e apresentam lesões de cárie após seis meses de tratamento. Procedimentos minimamente invasivos têm sido o objetivo na prática odontológica moderna. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do ClinproTM XT selante ionomérico, ao redor do bráquete, com relação a rugosidade superficial do esmalte e a severidade da lesão induzida. Vinte pré-molares foram submetidos a colagem de bráquetes e indução experimental de desmineralização e divididos aleatoriamente em 2 grupos: GI - verniz fluoretado (Colgate Duraphat®); GII - Selante Ionomérico (ClinproTM XT). O tratamento foi aplicado ao redor dos bráquetes. A rugosidade da superfície dos espécimes foi analisada, antes do tratamento e 12 semanas após o tratamento por microscopia confocal a laser e severidade da lesão de mancha branca por dispositivo de fluorescência a laser. Os dados foram analisados pelo teste não paramétrico de Wilcoxon e Mann-Whitney, a 5% de significância. A taxa de redução da lesão foi calculada. A severidade da desmineralização diminuiu tanto no GI (p = 0,005) quanto no GII (p = 0,019). Os níveis de rugosidade superficial do esmalte diminuíram no GI e GII, assim como o percentual de rugosidade, sendo mais expressivo no grupo ClinproTMXT (85,09%). Colgate Duraphat® e Clinpro™ XT reduziram a severidade da desmineralização e diminuíram a rugosidade superficial do esmalte. O selante ionomérico Clinpro™ XT foi superior na redução percentual de rugosidade.

Abstract This study aimed to assess and correlate initial surface roughness and frictional resistance of rectangular CuNiTi wires inserted in different self-ligating brackets. The sample consisted of 40 bracket-wire sets (rectangular CuNiTi wires of 0.017" x 0.025" and passive self-ligating brackets) divided into four groups (n=10): metallic self-ligating bracket and metallic CuNiTi wire (G1); metallic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G2); esthetic self-ligating bracket and metallic wire (G3); esthetic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G4). The initial surface roughness of the wires was examined with a Surfcorder roughness meter, model SE1700. Later, frictional resistance was assessed in an Instron 4411 universal testing machine at a speed of 5 mm/min, in an aqueous medium at 35°C. Microscopic analyses of surface morphology were performed with scanning electron microscopy, using an LEO 1430, with magnifications of 1000X. Generalized linear models were applied, considering the 2 x 2 factorial (bracket type x wire type), at a 5% significance level. Regardless of bracket type, the groups with esthetic wires presented higher initial surface roughness than the groups with metallic wires (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the different bracket-wire sets for frictional resistance and no significant correlation between frictional resistance and initial surface roughness in the environment studied. It is concluded that esthetic wires presented higher initial surface roughness but did not interfere with the frictional resistance between brackets and wires.


Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e correlacionar a rugosidade superficial inicial e a resistência a fricção dos fios CuNiTi retangulares inseridos em diferentes bráquetes autoligados. A amostra foi composta por 40 conjuntos bráquetes-fios (fios retangulares CuNiTi de 0.017" x 0.025" e braquetes autoligados passivos), divididos em 4 grupos (n=10): bráquete autoligado metálico e fio CuNiti metálico (G1); braquete autoligado metálico e fio CuNiti com revestimento de rhodium (G2); bráquete autoligado estético e fio metálico (G3); bráquete autoligado estético e fio CuNiti com revestimento de rhodium (G4). A rugosidade superficial inicial do fio foi examinada com um rugosímetro Surfcorder modelo SE1700. Posteriormente, a resistência a fricção foi avaliada em uma máquina de ensaios universal Instron 4411, a uma velocidade de 5mm/min em meio aquoso à 35oC. Análises microscópicas da morfologia de superfície foram realizadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, utilizando um LEO 1430, com ampliações de 1000X. Foram aplicados modelos lineares generalizados, considerando o fatorial 2 x 2 (tipo de bráquete x tipo de fio), com o nível de significância de 5%. Independentemente do tipo de bráquete, os grupos com fios estéticos apresentaram maior rugosidade superficial inicial que os grupos com fios metálicos (p<0,05). Não houve diferença significativa entre os diferentes conjuntos bráquetes-fios quanto a resistência à fricção e não houve correlação significativa entre a resistência a fricção e a rugosidade superficial inicial no ambiente estudado. Conclui-se que os fios estéticos apresentaram maior rugosidade superficial inicial porém não interferiram na resistência a fricção entre os braquetes e os fios.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the pulp chamber temperature rise (PCTR) in light-cure bonding of brackets with and without primer, in intact and restored mandibular central incisors (M1), maxillary first premolars (Mx4), and mandibular third molars (M8). Material and Methods: Ninety human teeth were included: M1 (n=30), Mx4 (n=30), and M8 (n=30). Light-cure bonding of brackets was performed in intact (n=60) and restored (n=30) teeth, with primer (n=60) or without (n=30) primer. PCTR was defined as the difference between initial (T0) and peak temperatures (T1), recorded with a thermocouple during light-cure bonding. Differences on PCTR between bonding techniques (primer vs. no primer), teeth types (M1 vs. Mx4 vs. M8), and teeth condition (intact vs. restored) were estimated by ANCOVA, with α=5%. Results: PCTR was significantly higher with the use of primer (2.05 ± 0.08oC) than without primer (1.65 ± 0.14oC) (p=0.02), and in M1 (2.23 ± 0.22oC) compared to Mx4 (1.56 ± 0.14oC) (p<0.01). There was no difference in the PCTR in M8 (1.77 ± 0.28oC) compared to M1 or Mx4 (p>0.05), and no difference between intact (1.78 ± 0.14oC) and restored (1.92 ± 0.08oC) teeth (p=0.38). There was no influence of dentin enamel thickness in the PCTR (p=0.19). Conclusion: PCTR was higher in light-cure bonding of brackets with primer, especially in M1. Light-cure bonding seems less invasive without primer.


RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar o aumento na temperatura da câmara pulpar (ATCP) na colagem de braquetes com fotoativação usando ou não primer, em dentes hígidos versus dentes restaurados, em incisivos centrais inferiores (ICI), primeiros pré-molares superiores (1PMS) e terceiros molares inferiores (3MI). Métodos: Foram incluídos noventa dentes humanos: ICI (n=30), 1PMS (n=30) e 3MI (n=30). A colagem de braquetes com fotoativação foi realizada em dentes hígidos (n=60) ou dentes restaurados (n=30), com primer (n=60) ou sem (n=30) primer. O ATCP foi definido como a diferença entre as temperaturas inicial (T0) e máxima (T1) registradas com um termômetro durante a colagem com fotoativação. As diferenças no ATCP entre as técnicas de colagem (com primer vs. sem primer), diferentes dentes (ICIvs.1PMSvs.3MI) e condição dos dentes (hígidos vs. restaurados) foram estimadas por ANCOVA, com α=5%. Resultados: O ATCP foi significativamente maior com o uso de primer (2,05 ± 0,08oC) do que sem primer (1,65 ± 0,14oC) (p=0,02), e no ICI (2,23 ± 0,22oC) do que no 1PMS (1,56 ± 0,14oC) (p<0,01). Não houve diferença no ATCP do 3MI (1,77 ± 0,28oC) em comparação com ICI ou 1PMS (p>0,05), e não houve diferença entre dentes hígidos (1,78 ± 0,14oC) e restaurados (1,92 ± 0,08oC) (p=0,38). Não houve influência da espessura da dentina e do esmalte no ATCP (p=0,19). Conclusão: O ATCP foi maior na colagem de braquetes com fotoativação usando primer, principalmente no ICI. A colagem com fotoativação parece ser menos invasiva sem primer.

ABSTRACT

Objective: in this study, biofilm formation by Candida albicans in fixed orthodontic appliances was evaluated. Material and Methods: a total of 300 conventional metal brackets (MC), ceramic (CB), self-ligation (SLB), nickel-titanium (NiTi), and nickel-chromium (NiCr) wires, and ligatures types were organized into thirty groups (n=10). To induce biofilm formation, brackets, wires, and ligatures were joined, sterilized, placed in 24-well plates, contaminated with standardized suspensions of C. albicans (107 cells/mL), and incubated at 37 °C for 48 h with shaking. The biofilms formed were detached using an ultrasonic homogenizer, and suspensions were serially diluted and plated on Sabouraud dextrose agar to determine colony-forming units per mL. Scanning electron microscopy was performed before and after the biofilm formation. Results: lower amount of biofilm formation was observed in the MC group than in the CB and SLB groups (p<0.0001). SLB and CB showed similar biofilm formation rates (p=0.855). In general, the cross-sectional wires .018"x.025" showed higher biofilm formation when associated with the three types of brackets. When brackets, wires, and ligatures were associated, the sets with NiCr wires and SSL ligatures with MC brackets (p=0.0008) and CB (p=0.0003) showed higher biofilm formation. Conclusion: thus, brackets of MC with NiTi and NiCr wires showed lower biofilm formation, regardless of the ligature and cross-sectional or gauge of the wire and, MC and CB brackets with NiCr wires and SSL ligatures were more likely to accumulate biofilms (AU)


Objetivo: neste estudo, a formação de biofilme por Candida albicans em aparelhos ortodônticos fixos foi avaliada. Material e Métodos: um total de 300 bráquetes metálicos convencionais (MC), cerâmicos (CB), autoligados (SLB), com fios de níquel-titânio (NiTi) e níquel-cromo (NiCr) e tipos de ligaduras foram organizados em trinta grupos (n=10). Bráquetes, fios e ligaduras foram unidos, esterilizados, colocados em placas de 24 poços, contaminados com suspensões padronizadas de C. albicans (107 células/mL) e incubados a 37°C por 48 h para a formação de biofilmes. Os biofilmes formados foram rompidos por meio de um homogeneizador ultrassônico e suspensões foram diluídas e semeadas em ágar Sabouraud-dextrose para determinar as unidades formadoras de colônias por mL. A microscopia eletrônica de varredura foi realizada antes e após a formação do biofilme. Resultados: foi observada menor formação de biofilme no grupo MC em comparação aos grupos CB e SLB (p<0,0001). A formação de biofilme foi semelhante nos grupos SLB e CB (p=0,855). Em geral, os fios de seção transversal .018"x.025" apresentaram maior formação de biofilme quando associados aos três tipos de bráquetes. Os conjuntos com fios de NiCr e ligaduras SSL com bráquetes MC (p=0,0008) e CB (p=0,0003) apresentaram maior formação de biofilme. Conclusão: bráquetes MC com fios de NiTi e NiCr apresentaram menor formação de biofilme, independente da ligadura e secção transversal ou bitola do fio e, braquetes MC e CB com fios de NiCr e ligaduras SSL foram mais propensos a acumular biofilmes.(AU)

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the transversal and anterior-posterior changes obtained in patients treated only with the Damon system. Material and Methods: 51 patients with either class I or class II division 1 sagittal relationship treated with the Damon system and the same archwire sequence were retrospectively selected. Dental casts of each patient before (T0) and after treatment (T1) were scanned and analyzed using NEMOCAST 3D software. Inter-molar, inter first-premolar, inter-second premolar and inter-canine distances were measured in both upper and lower arches. Initial and final lateral cephalograms were traced using the OrisCeph program. Pre and post-treatment measurements were compared using the t-test for repeated measurements. The Pearson Correlation Index and Linear Regression Analysis were used to determine the dependence between continuous variables. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: Transversal diameters in the upper arch increase statistically significantly, especially in the bicuspid area. Initial intra-arch diameter was the only statistically significant variable correlated with the final expansion obtained. A linear negative correlation between the initial latero-posterior torque and the final expansion was observed in both arches. Conclusion: Using identical arches in patients with very different initial characteristics, the changes in bicuspids' diameters remain the most predominant. Patients with initial more negative torque in the posterior region had a higher expansion amount.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the in-vitro effect of single applications of CPP-ACP pastes and different fluoridated solutions on the prevention of dental caries around orthodontic brackets. Material and Methods: Tooth/bracket sets (n=65) were immersed in artificial saliva (1h at 37ºC) and randomly subjected to single applications (100µL; 1min) of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP emulsion), CPP-ACP with fluoride (CPP-ACPF emulsion), solutions of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) or sodium fluoride (NaF), or no treatment (CG). Multispecies biofilm (5 x 105 CFU/mL) was formed in the presence of 2% sucrose. After 24 h, the pH and the concentration of total soluble fluoride (TSF) were analyzed by culture medium. The presence of active white spot lesions (WSL) evaluated by macroscopic examination and the percent surface mineral loss (%SML) were analyzed. Also, the topography of enamel was detected by analysis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data was assessed by chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05). Results: Fluoride-containing compounds led to a smaller pH reduction than did CPP-ACP and CG (p<0.05). There was difference in TSF between the groups (p<0.05), denoted as TiF4> NaF > CPP-ACPF > CPP-ACP > CG. Regarding the presence of WSL and %SML, the NaF group obtained lower values (p<0.05), while TiF4 and CPP-ACPF were similar (p>0.05). SEM demonstrated that fluoride-free groups had a larger surface dissolution. Conclusion: Fluoridated groups including solutions and CPP-ACPF were more effective than CPP-ACP in reducing enamel demineralization around orthodontic brackets after a single application.


RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar in-vitro o efeito de uma aplicação única de cremes dentais de CPP-ACP e diferentes soluções fluoretadas na prevenção da cárie dentária ao redor de braquetes ortodônticos Material e Métodos: O conjunto dentes/braquetes (n=65) foi imerso em saliva artificial (1h em 37°C) randomizado e submetido a tratamento único (100µL; 1 min) de emulsão de fosfopeptídeo de caseína-fosfato de cálcio amorfo (CPP-ACP) e CPP-ACP associado ao flúor (CPP-ACPF); soluções de tetrafluoreto de titânio (TiF4) e fluoreto de sódio (NaF); e ausência de tratamento (GC). Biofilmes multiespécie (5 x 105 CFU/mL) foram formados na presença de sacarose a 2%. Após 24h, o pH e a concentração de fluoreto solúvel total (FST) foram analisados pelo meio de cultura. Foram avaliadas a presença de lesões de mancha branca (LMB), por meio da análise de macroscopia visual, e a porcentagem de perda de dureza (%PD). Também foi verificada a topografia do esmalte, usando microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os dados foram analisados pelos testes Qui-quadrado, Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney (p < 0,05). Resultados: Os compostos contendo flúor levaram a uma redução do pH menor do que o CPP-ACP e GC (p<0,05). Houve diferença no FST entre os grupos (p <0,05), sendo TiF4> NaF > CPP-ACPF > CPP-ACP > GC. Quanto à presença de LMB e à %PD, o grupo NaF obteve os menores valores (p<0,05), enquanto TiF4 e CPP-ACPF foram semelhantes (p> 0,05). A MEV demonstrou que os grupos sem flúor tiveram uma dissolução superficial maior. Conclusão: Os grupos fluoretados, incluindo soluções e CPP-ACPF, foram mais eficazes do que o CPP-ACP sem flúor na redução da desmineralização do esmalte ao redor dos braquetes ortodônticos após uma única aplicação.

Abstract The aims of this clinical study were to evaluate the Color change - ΔE (based on spectrophotometry and visual analysis) and luminosity - L* (based on spectrophotometry) of dental enamel surface (after orthodontic treatment) around the area where orthodontic brackets were fixed, based on different cementing materials such as a resin (R group) and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC group). The split-mouth study initially comprised 14 patients. Orthodontic brackets were fixed to the upper central incisors with resin or RMGIC. The color of the buccal surface of each tooth was measured through spectrophotometry and visual examination before the bracket-fixation process. Four individuals were excluded during the follow-up; thus 10 patients were evaluated (n=10). Brackets were removed after 12 months of orthodontic treatment, tooth color measurement and visual examination were performed again, and Adhesive Remaining Index (ARI) was also measured. ΔE and L* results were subjected to Student's t-test and by repeated-measures analysis of variance, respectively (α=0.05). ARI data were analyzed in percentages. There was statistically significant difference in ΔE between groups; the R group showed statistically higher values of L* after orthodontic treatment. ARI of 2 and 3 prevailed in the RMGIC group, whereas the R group presented 0 and 1. After orthodontic treatment, the RMGIC group presented smaller changes in ΔE, and the increase in the white scale was observed on the enamel surface around the area where brackets were fixed in the R group. The visual analysis did not show color change on the evaluated teeth.


Resumo Os objetivos deste estudo clínico foram avaliar a alteração de cor - ΔE (baseada em espectrofotometria e análise visual) e luminosidade - L* (baseada em espectrofotometria) da superfície do esmalte dentário (após tratamento ortodôntico) ao redor da área onde os braquetes ortodônticos foram fixados, com base em diferentes materiais de cimentação, como resina (grupo R) e cimento de ionômero de vidro modificado por resina (grupo RMGIC). Estudo boca dividida foi inicialmente composto por 14 pacientes. Os braquetes ortodônticos foram fixados nos incisivos centrais superiores com resina ou RMGIC. A cor da superfície vestibular de cada dente foi mensurada por espectrofotometria e avaliada por exame visual antes do processo de fixação dos braquetes. Quatro indivíduos foram excluídos durante o acompanhamento; assim, 10 pacientes foram avaliados (n=10). Os braquetes foram removidos após 12 meses de tratamento ortodôntico, a mensuração da cor do dente e o exame visual foram realizados novamente, e o Índice de Remanescente do Adesivo (IRA) também foi mensurado. Os resultados ΔE e L* foram submetidos ao teste t de Student e à análise de variância para medidas repetidas, respectivamente (α=0.05). Os dados do ARI foram analisados em porcentagens. Houve diferença estatisticamente significativa no ΔE entre os grupos; o grupo R apresentou valores estatisticamente maiores de L* após o tratamento ortodôntico. O IRA 2 e 3 prevaleceu no grupo RMGIC, enquanto o grupo R apresentou 0 e 1. Após o tratamento ortodôntico, o grupo RMGIC apresentou menores alterações no ΔE e o aumento da escala branca foi observado na superfície do esmalte ao redor da área onde os braquetes foram fixados no grupo R. A análise visual não mostrou mudança de cor nos dentes avaliados.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN Objetivo : Evaluar la preferencia y aceptabilidad sobre seis diferentes diseños de aparatos ortodónticos fijos en adolescentes peruanos de dos colegios de Lima. Material y Métodos : Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal en un total de 140 adolescentes con edades entre 10 y 16 años, que completaron una ficha de registro en donde se evaluó la preferencia, aceptabilidad, orden de preferencia y aceptabilidad al uso sobre seis diferentes diseños de aparatos fijos visualizados en un álbum de fotografías. Resultados : Los datos fueron analizados con el paquete estadístico SPSS versión 24.0. Se utilizó un nivel de significancia de 5% con un intervalo de confianza de 95%. Debido a la naturaleza de las variables se utilizó la prueba de Chi cuadrado Los adolescentes prefirieron los brackets metálicos con módulos elásticos de colores y arco de acero (24,3%, n=34); y la aceptabilidad fue de 92,1%. Para el orden de preferencia, se encontró la siguiente jerarquía de primer a sexto lugar: brackets metálicos con módulos elásticos de colores y arco de acero > brackets de zafiro con módulos elásticos transparentes y arco estético > brackets metálicos con módulos elásticos transparentes y arco de acero > brackets de zafiro con módulos elásticos transparentes y arco de acero > brackets de zafiro con módulos elásticos de colores y arco de acero > brackets metálicos autoligantes y arco de acero/brackets de zafiro con módulos elásticos de colores y arco de acero. Se encontró una asociación estadísticamente significativa para algunas preguntas sobre la aceptabilidad al uso en relación al grupo de edad, sexo e institución educativa. Conclusiones : Los adolescentes prefirieron los brackets metálicos con módulos elásticos de colores y arco de acero. Los brackets metálicos autoligantes con arco de acero y los brackets de zafiro con módulos elásticos de colores y arco de acero, presentaron menos preferencia.


ABSTRACT Objective : To evaluate the preference and acceptability of six different orthodontic fixed appliance designs in Peruvian adolescents from two schools in Lima. Material and Methods : A descriptive cross-sectional study was executed. A total of 140 adolescents aged between 10 and 16 years completed a registration form in which the preference, acceptability, order of preference and acceptability to use were evaluated on six different designs of fixed orthodontic appliances displayed in a photo album. Results : Data analysis was performed using the SPSS program version 24.0. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered as a level for significance. Due to the nature of the variables the Chi square test was used. Adolescents preferred metal brackets with colored elastomeric modules and steel arch (24.3%, n= 34); and the acceptability was 92.1%. For the order of preference, the following hierarchy was found from the first to the sixth place: metal brackes with colored elastomeric modules and steel archwire > sapphire brackets with transparent elastomeric modules and aesthetic archwire > metal brackets with transparent elastomeric modules and steel archwire > sapphire brackets with transparent elastomeric modules and steel archwire > sapphire brackets with colored elastomeric modules and steel archwire > self-ligating metal brackets and steel archwire/sapphire brackets with colored elastomeric modules and steel archwire. A statistically significant association was found for some questions about acceptability to use in relation to the age group, sex and educational institution. Conclusions : Adolescents preferred metallic brackets with colored elastomeric modules and steel arches. The less preferred appliances were the self-ligating metallic brackets with steel archwire and the sapphire brackets with colored elastomeric modules and steel archwire.

Introduction: After fixed orthodontic treatment, following bracket removal, the debonding procedure should lead to restitutio ad integrum of the enamel or, at least, restore the enamel surface as closely as possible to its pretreatment condition. Adhesion of brackets in orthodontics is that they should be strong enough to prevent failure during all treatment but also low enough, so that enamel damage would be minimal during bracket removal after treatment. Material and Methods: A total of 60 premolars were collected and stored in distilled water. The extracted teeth were divided into two groups of 30 each, group A was to be bonded with self?cure adhesive while group B light cure adhesive was to be used. A standardised protocol was followed for adhering the brackets to the tooth surfaces. All the teeth were bonded with metal brackets (3M Unitek, Gemini Twin Brackets 0.022 slot). In group A, bonding adhesive (3M Unitek self cure adhesive primer) was applied. In group B, the bonding adhesive (3M Unitek light cure adhesive primer) was photopolymerized for 10 seconds after application. Results: Surface roughness of enamel as assessed by profilometry shows that light cure adhesive creates more roughness as compared to self cure adhesive. To conclude, self cure adhesive is clinically better than light cure adhesive. Discussion: In the present study enamel surface roughness were compared after debonding. ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effects of bracket-free invisible orthodontic technique versus traditional fixed orthodontic technique on the levels of inflammatory factors in the gingival crevicular fluid of orthodontic adolescents. Methods:A total of 67 orthodontic patients who received their first orthodontic treatment in Huzhou Central Hospital from June to September 2020 were included in this study. They were randomly divided into an observation group ( n = 34) and a control group ( n = 33). The control group was treated with traditional fixed orthodontic treatment. The observation group was treated with invisible orthodontic treatment without brackets. At 0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 months of treatment, the level of inflammatory factors and periodontal index were compared. Results:At 0 and 1 month of treatment, there were no significant differences in the levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the gingival crevicular fluid between the observation and control groups (all P > 0.05). At 2, 4, and 6 months of treatment, the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (IL-1β: t2 months = 5.56, P = 0.042; t4 months = 8.14, P = 0.019; t6 months = 9.87, P = 0.002. IL-6: t2 months = 7.15, P = 0.029; t4 months = 7.94, P = 0.021; t6 months = 9.16, P = 0.007. TNF-α: t2 months = 6.87, P = 0.039; t4 months = 7.65, P = 0.026: t6 months = 9.89, P = 0.001). In each group, gingival index (GI), sulcus bleeding index (SBI), probing depth (PD), and plaque index (PLI) increased significantly after treatment. At 0 and 1 month of treatment, there were no significant differences in GI, SBI, PD, and PLI between the two groups (all P > 0.05). At 2, 4, and 6 months of treatment, GI, SBI, PD, and PLI in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (GI: t2 months = 3.62, P = 0.073; t4 months = 8.16, P = 0.018; t6 months = 8.54, P = 0.016. SBI: t2 months = 5.65, P = 0.042; t4 months = 7.56, P = 0.027; t6 months = 8.15, P = 0.019. PD: t2 months = 5.652, P = 0.042; t4 months = 7.56, P = 0.027, t6 months = 8.15, P = 0.019. PLI: t2 months = 9.57, P = 0.006; t4 months = 9.98, P = 0.002. t6 months = 9.94, P = 0.010). In addition, at 1 month of treatment, PLI in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group ( t = 9.99, P = 0.001). Conclusion:Bracket-free invisible orthodontic treatment provides better protection on periodontal tissue and has less impact on periodontal health than traditional fixed orthodontic treatment.

ABSTRACT@#Duration of orthodontic treatment becomes major concern. The present study compared shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) values of different adhesive systems with different application methods on rebonding process of retrieved orthodontic brackets. Eighty premolar teeth were equally divided into five groups. Transbond XT (TXT) which belongs to total-etch system was used in Group 1 as the control group. Nova Compo-SF (NC) and Vertise Flow (VF) (Kerr Dental, Italy) which are self-adhering flowable composites were used in Group 2 (NC+etch) and Group 3 (VF+etch) respectively with additional etching before application. Group 4 (NC) and Group 5 (VF) were used by following instructions of each brand. The brackets were debonded with a bracket removing plier and rebonded with the same procedures after sandblasting of the bracket and surface cleaning of the enamel. SBS and ARI were measured for each sample. Comparison between all groups was performed by Kruskal-Wallis test and chisquare test. The highest SBS was observed in NC+etch (median = 11.44, mean = 13.49±9.42), followed by NC (median = 10.17, mean = 11.35±6.55), TXT (median = 6.36, mean = 8.06±6.33), VF+etch (median = 5.68, mean = 6.75±4.58), and VF (median = 2.62, mean = 2.92±2.57), respectively. ARI 1 was observed in 81.3% of TXT whereas 62.5% of NC+etch. ARI 1, 2, and 3 were equally distributed in VF+etch group (31.3%). ARI 5 was observed in 37.5% of NC and 62.5% of VF. Analyses referred to statistically significant differences between five groups regarding both SBS and ARI (p < 0.001). As NC showed the highest SBS on rebonding process, it can be a promising alternative to TXT which is the gold standard.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke (CS) on physical and mechanical properties of ceramic, polycarbonate and alumina ceramic brackets. The null hypothesis tested was that aesthetic brackets would not be influenced by CS. Methods: Ninety aesthetic brackets were allocated to three groups (n = 30): ceramic (GCE), polycarbonate (GCO) and alumina ceramic (GPS). Ten samples of each group were assigned to color and surface roughness analysis, performed before (T0) and after (T1) exposure to CS; and twenty samples were allocated into control and experimental groups (n = 10) (not exposed and exposed to CS, respectively) for shear bond strength test (SBS). Exposure to CS followed an adaptation of the method described by Le Mesurier. Colorimetric reading, surface morphology and roughness, SBS and adhesive remnant index (ARI) were assessed. Statistical analysis comprised independent and paired t-tests, ANOVA/Tukey and Fisher's exact tests (α = 0.05). Results: Changes were observed in brackets' color (NBS: GCE = 2.4; GCO = 1.9; GPS = 2.1), surface roughness (ΔRa: GCE = 1.1 ± 0.8 µm; GCO = 1.9 ± 1.5µm; GPS = -0.3 ± 0.1 µm / ΔRz: GCE = 1.4 ± 1.0 nm; GPS = -0.5 ± 0.1 nm); and SBS (GPS - experimental = 221.8 ± 48.6 N) after exposure to CS (p< 0.05). Conclusions: Exposure, in vitro, of aesthetic brackets to CS resulted in changes of color to darker and more opaque shades, surface roughness alterations, and higher SBS values. ARI scores were not associated with exposure to CS.


RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da fumaça do cigarro (FC) nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas de braquetes cerâmicos, de policarbonato e de cerâmica de alumina. A hipótese nula testada foi de que os braquetes estéticos não seriam influenciados pela FC. Métodos: Noventa braquetes estéticos foram alocados em três grupos (n = 30): cerâmica (GCE), policarbonato (GCO) e cerâmica de alumina (GPS). Dez amostras de cada grupo foram designadas para análise de cor e rugosidade superficial, realizada antes (T0) e após (T1) exposição à FC, e vinte amostras foram alocadas nos grupos controle e experimental (n = 10) (não expostos e expostos à FC, respectivamente) para o teste de resistência ao cisalhamento (RC). A exposição à FC foi realizada de acordo com o método descrito por Le Mesurier. Leitura colorimétrica, morfologia e rugosidade de superfície, RC e índice de adesivo remanescente (ARI) foram avaliados. A análise estatística foi realizada por meio dos testes t independente e para amostras pareadas, ANOVA/Tukey e teste exato de Fisher (α = 0,05). Resultados: Foram observadas alterações na cor (NBS: GCE = 2,4; GCO = 1,9; GPS = 2,1), rugosidade superficial (ΔRa: GCE = 1,1 ± 0,8 µm; GCO = 1,9 ± 1,5 µm; GPS = -0,3 ± 0,1 µm / ΔRz: GCE = 1,4 ± 1,0 nm; GPS = -0,5 ± 0,1 nm) e RC (GPS - experimental = 221,8 ± 48,6 N) dos braquetes após exposição à FC (p< 0,05). Conclusões: A exposição in vitro de braquetes estéticos à FC resultou em mudanças na cor, para tons mais escuros e mais opacos; alterações na rugosidade superficial e maiores valores de RC. Os resultados do ARI não foram associados à exposição à FC.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Many patients wearing orthodontic appliances request alterations in the shade of their teeth during orthodontic treatment. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different products for bleaching and whitening under orthodontic brackets. Methods: Seventy bovine incisors were randomly divided into five groups (n = 14): C) non-whitening toothpaste (control); WTsi) hydrated silica whitening toothpaste; WThp) 2% hydrogen peroxide whitening toothpaste; OB) in-office bleaching; and HB) at-home bleaching. Two buccal surface areas were evaluated using the Easyshade spectrophotometer: under the metal bracket (experimental) and around the bracket (control). The paired t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey tests were applied for statistical analysis. Results: Intragroup comparisons showed that in groups C, WThp and HB, there were statistically significant differences in the enamel color changes (ΔEab) between under and around the bracket areas (C - under bracket = 7.97 ± 2.35, around bracket = 2.86 ± 0.81, p< 0.01; WThp - under bracket = 4.69 ± 2.98, around bracket = 2.05 ± 1.41, p< 0.01; HB - under bracket = 7.41 ± 2.89, around bracket: 9.86 ± 3.32, p= 0.02). Groups WTsi, OB and HB presented similar perception of tooth whiteness (ΔWID) between the tested areas. Intergroup comparisons demonstrated that under the bracket area, the color change (ΔEab) was similar for all groups, except WThp (C = 7.97 ± 2.35; WTsi = 8.54 ± 3.63; WThp = 4.69 ± 2.98; OB = 9.31 ± 4.32; HB = 7.41 ± 2.89; p< 0.01). Conclusions: The dental color changes were effective for the products tested in groups WTsi, OB and HB in the presence of metallic orthodontic brackets.


RESUMO Introdução: Durante o tratamento ortodôntico, muitos pacientes solicitam, também, alteração na cor dos seus dentes. Objetivo: O presente estudo avaliou diferentes produtos clareadores e branqueadores, quanto à sua eficácia sob os braquetes ortodônticos. Métodos: 70 incisivos bovinos foram aleatoriamente divididos em cinco grupos (n = 14): C) dentifrício não branqueador (controle); WTsi) dentifrício branqueador com sílica hidratada; WThp) dentifrício branqueador com peróxido de hidrogênio a 2%; OB) clareamento no consultório e HB) clareamento caseiro. Usando um espectrofotômetro Easyshade, foram avaliadas duas áreas na superfície vestibular dos dentes: sob o braquete (experimental) e ao redor do braquete (controle). Para análise estatística, foram usados os testest pareado, ANOVA e Tukey. Resultados: As comparações intragrupos demonstraram que, nos grupos C, WThp e HB, ocorreram diferenças estatisticamente significativas nas alterações de cor do esmalte (ΔEab) entre as áreas sob o braquete e ao redor do braquete (C: sob o braquete = 7,97 ± 2,35, ao redor do braquete = 2,86 ± 0,81, p< 0,01; WThp: sob o braquete = 4,69 ± 2,98, ao redor do braquete = 2,05 ± 1,41, p< 0,01; HB: sob o braquete = 7,41 ± 2,89, ao redor do braquete = 9,86 ± 3,32, p= 0,02). Os grupos WTsi, OB e HB demonstraram semelhanças na percepção do clareamento (ΔWID) entre as áreas avaliadas. As comparações intergrupos demonstraram que, nas áreas sob os braquetes, as alterações de cor (ΔEab) foram semelhantes para os grupos, com exceção do WThp (C = 7,97 ± 2,35; WTsi = 8,54 ± 3,63; WThp = 4,69 ± 2,98; OB = 9,31 ± 4,32; HB = 7,41 ± 2,89; p< 0,01). Conclusões: As alterações na cor dos dentes foram efetivas para os procedimentos testados nos grupos WTsi, OB e HB na presença de braquetes metálicos ortodônticos.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate, in-vitro, the change in crown inclination that occurs during orthodontic leveling and alignment using different archwire-bracket-ligation combinations. Materials and Methods: Four archwire types were tested: (1) 0.012-in stainless steel and (2) 0.0155-in stainless steel multi-stranded, (3) 0.012-in nitinol Orthonol® and (4) 0.012-in nitinol Thermalloy®. Combinations with five types of 0.022-in slot orthodontic brackets were tested: SmartClipTM and Time3® self-ligating brackets, Mini-Taurus® and Victory SeriesTM conventional brackets, and Synergy® conventional-low friction bracket. Conventional brackets were ligated with both stainless steel and elastomeric ligatures. The simulated malocclusion comprised 2.0mm gingival and 2.0mm labial displacements of a maxillary right central incisor. Rotation around the Y-axis (representing labio-palatal inclination) was measured for the different archwire-bracket-ligation combinations. Results: The largest rotation was measured whith Orthonol® and Thermalloy® wires when combined with SmartClipTM brackets (8.07±0.24º and 8.06±0.26º, respectively) and with Synergy® brackets ligated with stainless steel ligatures (8.03±0.49º and 8.0±0.37º, respectively). The lower rotation was recorded when Thermalloy®, multi-stranded, and Orthonol® wires were ligated with elastomeric rings to Mini-Taurus® brackets (1.53±0.18º, 1.65± 0.23º and 1.70±0.28º, respectively) and to Victory SeriesTM brackets (1.68± 0.78º, 2.92± 1.40º and 1.74±0.46º, respectively). Conclusions: All archwire-bracket-ligation combinations produced lingual crown inclination; however, lower changes were observed when the conventional brackets were ligated with elastomeric rings. The multi-stranded archwire produced less rotation with nearly every bracket-ligation combination, compared to the other archwires. The effect of the archwire-bracket-ligation combination on tooth inclination during leveling and alignment should be considered during planning treatment mechanics.


RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar, in vitro, as mudanças na inclinação das coroas dentárias que acontecem durante o alinhamento e nivelamento usando diferentes combinações de arcos/braquetes/ligaduras. Material e Métodos: Foram usados quatro tipos de arcos ortodônticos: (1) 0,012" de aço inoxidável, (2) 0,0155" de aço multifilamentado, (3) Orthonol® 0,012" de nitinol e (4) Thermalloy® 0,012" de nitinol. Esses arcos foram combinados com cinco tipos de braquetes ortodônticos com slot 0,022": braquetes autoligáveis SmartClipTM e Time3®, braquetes convencionais Mini-Taurus® e Victory SeriesTM, e braquetes convencionais de baixo atrito Synergy®. Os braquetes convencionais receberam ligaduras de aço ou elastoméricas. A má oclusão simulada foi composta por um deslocamento do incisivo central superior direito em 2 mm para a cervical e 2 mm para a vestibular. A rotação ao redor do eixo Y (representando a inclinação vestibulolingual) foi medida para as diferentes combinações de arco/braquete/ligadura. Resultados: A maior rotação foi medida quando os arcos Orthonol® e Thermalloy® foram usados com os braquetes SmartClipTM (8,07±0,24º e 8,06±0,26º, respectivamente) e com os braquetes Synergy® com ligaduras metálicas (8,03±0,49º e 8,0±0,37º, respectivamente). A menor rotação foi vista quando os arcos Thermalloy®, multifilamentado e Orthonol® foram presos por ligaduras elastoméricas aos braquetes Mini-Taurus® (1,53±0,18º, 1,65±0,23º e 1,70±0,28º, respectivamente) e aos braquetes Victory SeriesTM (1,68±0,78º, 2,92±1,40º e 1,74±0,46º, respectivamente). Conclusões: todas as combinações arco-braquete-ligadura produziram inclinação palatina da coroa. Entretanto, as menores mudanças foram observadas quando os braquetes convencionais receberam ligaduras elastoméricas. O arco multifilamentado produziu menor rotação com quase todas as combinações braquete-ligadura, em comparação aos outros arcos. O efeito da combinação arco-braquete-ligadura na inclinação dentária durante o alinhamento e nivelamento deve ser considerado durante o planejamento da mecânica dos tratamentos.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of chewing gums containing CPP-ACP in remineralisation of demineralised enamel around orthodontic brackets. Material and Methods: Enamel blocks from 120 bovine incisors were used. The blocks were flattened and polished, followed by the development of incipient subsurface caries. The blocks have been subjected to a baseline microhardness analysis. Orthodontic brackets were bonded to the exposed area of the blocks, reserving an area for hardness analysis. An in situ crossover (three-way crossover phases of 21 days with an interval of one week between them), controlled, randomised and blind experimental model was used, with the participation of 12 volunteers divided into groups: G1 - negative control group, without chewing gum; G2 - conventional sugar-free chewing gum, without CPP-ACP (placebo); and G3 - sugar-free chewing gum with CPP-ACP. The following parameters were analysed: superficial linear (Ra), volumetric roughness (Sa), and superficial structural loss, which was indicated by Gap measurement (difference between the healthy and treated area). Statistical tests used were the Friedman, Wilcoxon and Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal Wallis' nonparametric tests and ANOVA. Results: There was a significant reduction in enamel microhardness after demineralisation in all the groups (p<0.05). This deleterious effect was attenuated in the three groups after the final evaluation, although there were no statistical differences (p<0.05); however, the final values did not return to the baseline values (p<0.05). Conclusion: Chewing gum containing CPP-ACP did not promote in situ remineralisation of demineralised enamel around orthodontic brackets.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of material and processing methods on the bond strength of orthodontic brackets. Material and Methods: Five types of brackets were tested: Conventional metallic (CM), metallic sandblasted (SB), ceramic (C), polycarbonate (PC), and metallic fabricated by melting injection molding (MIM). Shear bond strength (SBS) was conducted to check bond strength of the brackets bonded to bovine teeth (n=10/group), and tensile bond strength (TBS) (20 brackets/group) to check bracket retention to bonding material (n=20/group). Both, SBS and TBS were conducted with 1mm/min crosshead speed in a universal testing machine. Bond strength was calculated in Megapascal (MPa) based on force (N) and bracket area (mm 2). Data normality was verified, and One-way ANOVA was the statistical test with Tukey post-hoc (α=0.05). Results: SB and MIM presented higher SBS compared to C, PC, and CM (p<0.05). SB and MIM also presented significantly higher TBS compared to CM and PC (p<0.05). However, MIM was not different of C for TBS. Conclusion: The type of material and method of fabrication are determinant factors that affect bond strength of orthodontic brackets and melting injection molding (MIM) is a remarkable technology to improve brackets retention during the orthodontic treatment. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos dos materiais e métodos de processamento na resistência de união de bráquetes ortodônticos. Material e Métodos: Cinco tipos de bráquetes foram testados: Convencionais metálicos (CM), metálicos jateados (SB), cerâmico (C), policarbonato (PC), e metálico fabricado por injeção de metal fundido em molde (MIM). A resistência de união ao cisalhamento (SBS) foi conduzida para verificar a resistência de união dos bráquetes aderidos a dentes bonivos (n=10/grupo) e a resistência à tração (TBS) (20 bráquetes/grupo) para verificar a retenção do bráquete ao material adesivo (n=20/grupo). SBS e TBS foram conduzidas com relação carga/velocidade de 1mm/min em uma máquina de ensaios universal. A resistência de união foi calculada em Megapascal (MPa) com base na força (N) pela área do bráquete (mm 2). A normalidade dos dados e a estatística foi realizada utilizando One-way ANOVA e Tukey post-hoc (α=0.05). SB e MIM apresentaram os maiores valores de SBS comparados com C, PC e CM (p<0.05). Resultados: SB e MIM também apresentaram valores significativamente maiores de TBS comparados com CM e PC (p<0.05). Contudo, os valores de TBS para o grupo MIM não foram significativamente diferentes de C. Conclusão: O tipo de material e o método de fabricação são fatores determinantes que afetam a resistência de união de bráquetes ortodônticos e a injeção de metal fundido em molde (MIM) é uma tecnologia relevante para melhorar a retenção dos bráquetes durante o tratamento ortodôntico. Abstract Objective: To evaluate and compare the shear bond strengths (SBS) and bracket failure rates (BFR) of orthodontic brackets bonded with Light Cure adhesive against those bonded with Self Cure adhesive. Material and Methods: The study had in vitro and in vivo parts. In the in vitro part to determine SBS of Light Bond(LB)(R) and Rely.a.Bond(RB)(R) adhesives used in bonding brackets to 88 extracted teeth, each adhesive type was used to bond 44 brackets. The clinical study was conducted to determine the BFR of the LB(R) and RB(R) adhesives by bonding 256 teeth using each adhesive type. A standardized bonding procedure was followed in both the in vitro and in vivo parts of the study. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, independent t-test, chi-square, and Pearson Correlation statistics. A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. SPSS version 21.0 was used to analyze the data generated. Results: There was a significantly higher mean SBS 10.6MPa for LB(R) adhesive than the 7.0MPa of the RB(R) adhesive. In the in vivo study, (LB)(R) had a greater but not significant BFR of 9.0% than RB(R) (8.0%). No significant relationship existed between the SBS of either adhesive type (as determined in vitro) and their BFR in vivo. Conclusion: Higher SBS of LB(R) did not translate to less BFR in the clinic, nor did a lower SBS of RB(R) translate to more BFR in the clinic (AU).

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effect of a single application of experimental nanocomposite solutions on the prevention of dental caries around orthodontic brackets. The specimens were exposed to mesoporous silica (MS) nanocomposites containing fluoride by association with titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) or sodium fluoride (NaF). Nanocomposites also could contain calcium and groups were described as MSCaTiF4, MSTiF4, MSCaNaF, MSNaF, and controls (TiF4, and NaF). Specimens were subjected to the formation of a multispecies biofilm to generate a cariogenic challenge. After 24h, both pH and total soluble fluoride concentration of the culture medium were assessed. Mineral loss was evaluated by percentage of surface mineral loss (%SML), mineral volume variation (ΔZ) of inner enamel and polarized light microscopy (PL). Linear (Ra) and volumetric (Sa) surface roughness and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) were used to assess enamel topography. Statistical analyses were conducted considering p<0.05. MSNaF had the highest value of culture medium pH after cariogenic challenge, similarly to MSTiF4. All nanocomposite solutions released less fluoride than their controls NaF and TiF4 (p<0.05). All nanocomposite solutions presented lower %SML compared to their respective control groups (p<0.05). Lower Ra, Sa and ΔZ were observed for experimental groups compared to TiF4 (p<0.05). The results were confirmed by PL and SEM analysis. The experimental nanocomposite solutions contributed for lower enamel demineralization around orthodontic brackets.


RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito in vitro de uma única aplicação de soluções experimentais de nanocompósitos na prevenção de cárie dentária em braquetes ortodônticos. Os espécimes foram expostos a nanocompósitos de sílica mesoporosa (MS) contendo fluoreto por associação com tetrafluoreto de titânio (TiF4) ou fluoreto de sódio (NaF). Os nanocompósitos também podem conter cálcio e os grupos foram descritos como MSCaTiF4, MSTiF4, MSCaNaF, MSNaF e controles (TiF4 e NaF). Os espécimes foram submetidos à formação de um biofilme multiespécie para gerar um desafio cariogênico. Após 24h, o pH e a concentração de flúor solúvel total do meio de cultura foram avaliados. A perda mineral foi avaliada pela porcentagem de perda mineral superficial (% SML), variação do volume mineral (ΔZ) do esmalte interno e microscopia de luz polarizada (PL). A rugosidade superficial linear (Ra) e volumétrica (Sa) e a microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) foram utilizadas para avaliar a topografia do esmalte. As análises estatísticas foram realizadas considerando p <0,05. MSNaF apresentou o maior valor de pH do meio de cultura após o desafio cariogênico, semelhante ao MSTiF4. Todas as soluções de nanocompósitos liberaram menos flúor do que seus controles NaF e TiF4 (p <0,05). Todas as soluções de nanocompósitos apresentaram% SML menor em comparação com seus respectivos grupos de controle (p <0,05). Ra, Sa e ΔZ menores foram observados para os grupos experimentais em comparação ao TiF4 (p <0,05). Os resultados foram confirmados por análises PL e SEM. As soluções experimentais de nanocompósitos contribuíram para a menor desmineralização do esmalte ao redor dos braquetes ortodônticos.

Introduction: Dental malocclusion is a public health problem and orthodontics is the specialty in charge of diagnosing and treating it, aesthetic brackets are an alternative, the costs are varied, which makes its precision doubtful. Objective: Evaluate the measurement and geometry of the slot of three brands of aesthetic brackets and verify their precision. Material and Methods: Twenty-four aesthetic Roth prescription 0.022" slot polycrystalline ceramic brackets were evaluated in three brands: American Orthodontics (United States), Morelli (Brazil) and Class One (China). Eight samples were measured per group in a specialized laboratory certified in measurement and calibration, the measurements of internal and external height were verified, per mesial and distal; and the parallelism of the slot of each bracket. The results were processed with SPSS 22 and tests of variance (ANOVA), Tukey and Student's t were used. Results:The measurements of the brackets' grooves do not correspond to the measurements announced by the manufacturers, these are greater, however, American Orthodontics is within the tolerance range (p<0.01); the slots in the mesio-distal direction and the lingual vestibule are not parallel in Morelli and Class One. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the slots of the supports are oversized, their geometry is not precise and varies greatly between brands and prices. The three-dimensional control of the tooth could be compromised.


Introducción: La maloclusión dental es un problema de salud pública y la ortodoncia es la especialidad encargada de diagnosticarla y tratarla, los brackets estéticos son una alternativa, los costos son variados lo que hace dudar su precisión. Objetivo: Evaluar la medida y geometría de la ranura de tres marcas de brackets estéticos y corroborar su precisión. Material y Métodos: Se evaluaron 24 brackets estéticos cerámicos policristalinos de ranura 0,022" prescripción Roth en tres marcas: American Orthodontics (Estados Unidos), Morelli (Brasil) y Class One (China). Se midieron ocho muestras por grupo en un laboratorio especializado y certificado en medición y calibración, se verificaron las medidas de altura interna y externa, por mesial y distal; y el paralelismo de la ranura de cada brackets. Los resultados fueron procesados con SPSS 22 y se utilizaron pruebas de varianza (ANOVA), Tukey y t de Student. Resultados: Las medidas de las ranuras de los brackets no se corresponden con la medida anunciada por los fabricantes, estas son mayores, sin embargo, American Orthodontics y Morelli se encuentra dentro del rango de tolerancia (p<0,01); las ranuras en sentido mesio distal y vestíbulo lingual no son paralelas estadísticamente en Morelli y Class One. Conclusión: Los resultados de este estudio indican que las ranuras de los soportes se encuentran sobredimensionadas, su geometría no es precisa y varía mucho entre marcas y precios. El control tridimensional del diente se podría ver comprometido.
